Grey Hair, Fresh Ideas - Why Companies Should Focus on Age Diversity

At a time when diversity in the workplace is becoming a topic of increasing importance: one essential dimension is often overlooked: age diversity. While the discussion on diversity covers many aspects such as gender, ethnicity, and culture, older workers are often left out. The 2015 WHO World Report on Ageing and Health highlights ageism as a cross-cultural phenomenon that, in some cases, is even more widespread than racism and sexism. Statistically, one in five Germans has already experienced discrimination because of their age. This article highlights how the momentum of the general diversity movement is often not enough to overcome age discrimination in everyday working life. Older employees, though offering great experience, are not only excluded from the discussion on diversity but also face prejudice and exclusion. It is time to shift the focus to this often-neglected group of experienced workers and recognize that true diversity should include all generations.
